 The
Atlanta Gas Light redevelopment is a 44-acre former industrial site within
the Edgewood neighborhood in the City of Atlanta. The mixed-use neighborhood
center plan evolved through more than 30 community meetings where surrounding
neighborhoods participated in the site planning and architectural design
process. Community concerns were addressed at all steps: by creating greenspace
in the form of a central park, preserving and rehabbing historic structures,
and creating a pedestrian friendly environment on the site.
Walkability and connectivity were imperative as the site, 800,000 square
feet retail and 500,000 square feet of residential, is situated within
a 10-minute walk of two separate MARTA transit stations. Surface parking
and service areas were minimized and concealed. With the mix of new townhomes
and streetfront retail the result is a pedestrian-oriented, neighborhood
retail district and an architectural character in keeping with the surrounding
historic neighborhoods.
This distinctive project will allow for anchor tenants and small box
tenants as well as local retailers and restaurants, featuring a variety
of architecture to suit the diverse tenant mix and compliment the area's
unique history. The center's proposed "Main Street" element
with its blend of local boutiques, friendly eateries and exciting national
retailers is sure to become a thriving hub of neighborhood activity for
families and singles alike. Additionally, an existing historic building
will be converted to residential lofts and this conversion will be the
cornerstone that blends new to old thus making the entire project a true
live-shop-play community.
